An Interview with 0xFibonacci

Crypto trading, hiking, mental health, and snowboarding are just a few of the things that MVHQ OG, 0xFibonacci opens up about.  In an honest and open chat, 0xFibonacci talks about taking time away from crypto to find balance, and then returning with a new, healthier, focus.  All the while inspiring others along the way.

Let’s get started then! I saw in one of your messages that you enjoy hiking.  What is it about hiking you enjoy?

0xFibonacci

Yeah I live in Colorado so there's always something to do outside. Hiking with my dogs, rafting, and disc golf are probably my favorite summer activities. I used to snowboard until I hurt my shoulder in 2015, but I'm considering picking up skiing at some point in the future.

jd_

That’s an impressive list! With all that opportunity to be outside, how did you find yourself in crypto?

0xFibonacci

I used to work as an actuarial consultant, and back in October 2017 I saw that Bitcoin futures were being introduced on a TV in our office lobby. That seemed significant to me, so I asked a buddy how to buy it, and bought my first Bitcoin for about $6500. I've always liked the idea of having a side hustle, so I've been trading crypto on and off ever since.

jd_

An actuary, so you’re training is in the measurement and management of risk…sounds like a good fit for this space. How did trading crypto lead you to NFTs and MVHQ?

0xFibonacci

Veefriends was actually the first NFT I bought. I'd heard of Gary Vee from a while back and a buddy of mine mentioned he was launching an NFT project. I bought three of them on release, flipped two of the three to get my principal back, and thought that was pretty cool. Then I proceeded to buy like 50 super yetis haha and quickly learned that I needed to find better information on project releases and strategy. I started looking for people on Twitter who knew what they were doing, and actually came across MVHQ from a tweet from Tropofarmer listing it as one of his top 3 discords.

jd_

Gary Vee, and Yetis, seem to be a common theme for many people who entered the space in '21. So, a search for better information and strategy led you to MVHQ initially. Since joining, how would you describe your experience?

0xFibonacci

Since joining MVHQ, I basically went from having a very limited knowledge of NFTs to becoming a professional trader. Between the strategy writeups from the team, the daily drop info to keep on top of the latest mints, the community of other hustlers, dedicated channels for specific conversations, and timely pings for major events like the MAYC stealth mint, the wealth of knowledge from the team and community really helped me develop as a trader. As an MVHQ 'whale', the complimentary VA service they've provided has been really helpful to keep on top of upcoming project mints as well.

It doesn’t take much to see that you’re building something special in the crypto channel. From daily posts and educational insights to a 4 part introductory video series. How did that all come about and do you have any thoughts or hopes for where it’s going?

0xFibonacci

As NFT volume dropped, I pivoted this summer from mostly trading NFTs to spending 90% of my time trading crypto. I had a base level of knowledge from personal experience, but I really doubled down on education myself and looked for other professional traders to learn from. I've always been happy to share what I'm seeing with the HQ fam, but the educational video series was a way to knowledge transfer ~70% of what I've learned the last few years to others in the group. I've managed to get to a point where I'm seeing consistent profits, and I'd love to be able to help more people see similar success. After all, it is just a skill that can be developed if you're willing to actually spend the time to learn and practice.

jd_

Well, it's obvious from the reactions and blessings I see that people are finding success because of you. That said, you've helped people beyond trading crypto as well. You shared with the community about some mental health struggles you faced this past summer and I was curious if you’d talk about what prompted you to open up.

0xFibonacci

Yeah of course. The TLDR of my post was that between a tear in my achilles, getting COVID, and the bear market, I fell into a depression this summer, but I worked with my therapist to get on some antidepressants and eventually got back to feeling like my old self. I've always been a very transparent person, and I wanted to share my experiences in case anyone else was going through anything similar during this bear market.

jd_

Your transparency and courage to share your story are exactly what we need to normalize the conversation about mental health. Because of someone like you sharing, I found support through counseling and medication for anxiety. Do you find that other things you have done, apart from medication and counseling, have helped you feel like yourself again?

0xFibonacci

That's great to hear! Yeah especially in this space it's super important to take care of your mental health. Lately I've just been focusing on two things: a consistent sleep schedule and cardio daily, and that's been helping my energy levels a ton. The power of habit is a great read that talks about keystone habits which are basically habits that once you get them down, they often lead to other good habits. Like when I work out regularly, I often eat better as well. Getting my body moving from cardio or going to the gym has always been a big one for me, so I'm just keeping it simple and focusing on that and a consistent sleep schedule for now, hoping that the rest will follow. Taking weekends off has also been a nice change of pace to mentally reset each week.

jd_

Something else that jumps out to me in your response is how you're taking time away. So many of us have an internal idea that the harder you work, the more success you'll have. What would you say to that?

0xFibonacci

Yeah, a big thing that contributed to me burning out earlier this summer was the non-stop 7 day grind that people can often get sucked into in this space. I think it's different for everyone depending if you're full-time or part-time (when I had a 9-5 job I remember looking forward to hustling on weekends since I wasn't distracted with work), but now that I've pivoted to mostly trading crypto vs. NFTs, sticking to weekdays during higher volume market hours has been a really nice change. I used to have pretty high anxiety from constantly worrying about missing out on opportunities, but I've come to accept that there will always be another trade setup. Now instead of stressing about missing moves, I try to just capitalize on opportunities when I'm dialed in. I've found that this approach not only takes a weight off my shoulders but also allows me to highly focus in shorter spurts rather than running on fumes for extended periods of semi-productivity.

jd_

Thanks so much for opening up about your experiences. I find it inspiring how you are willing to share and invite others into the conversation about mental health.
Let's change gears a bit and come back to crypto trading. What would you say to people who are thinking about getting into it, but are still unsure and maybe even a bit overwhelmed by the idea?

0xFibonacci

Sure thing. I would tell them that it's a skill that can be trained just like anything else. In MVHQ I've pulled together a pretty comprehensive intro to day trading course that people can check out. It's also linked on my Twitter if anyone outside the discord wants to see the sort of alpha that's shared in MVHQ. I'm also a big proponent of paper trading (with fake money) for at least a month when trying it out for the first time.

jd_

I've had a chance to look at those videos and they're incredible. You do a tremendous job of laying things out and making it easy to follow along.

How about we hit you with rapid-fire questions?
Ready?

0xFibonacci

-What has been your favorite NFT so far? I ended up deciding to sell almost all of my blue chip NFTs except for alpha groups, but I had a Yu-gi-oh Clonex at one point that I really liked.

-What is your go-to lazy dinner? Chipotle

-Coffee or tea? Tea

-What item is worth spending more money on? Things that provide education & access to valuable networks

-Is your bed made right now? Yes lol

-If you could afford any car, which one would you drive? I'm super frugal IRL haha so wouldn't ever splurge on a luxury car, but an electric self-driving car in 5-10 years would be pretty cool.

-Have you ever written a song for someone? Yes. I actually was in an acapella group in high school & had a choir scholarship in college.

-What NFT do you regret the most? Apeing hard into Voxies instead of RTFKT July/Aug 2021.

-If you could be transformed into one animal, which would you choose? Monkey

-What dish do you cook best? Egg pad thai in an instant pot

-What is your hidden talent? Soccer; played D1 in college. That and blowing spit bubbles

-If you were to write a book (non-crypto related), what would it be about? Not super exciting but probably some practical finance book haha, I've learned a lot over the years

jd_

These answers made me laugh quite a bit. I didn't see the spit bubbles coming and now you have me wondering what it means to be talented at it, maybe you can show us at an MVHQ meet-up one day.

Thank you for your time, your knowledge, and your honesty.

Before I let you go, are there any last thoughts you might want to share with everyone?

0xFibonacci

Haha maybe not during dinner but happy to share the alpha sometime. Really the only thing I can think of is a recommendation for people to find what you're good at and what you enjoy in this space, and really double down on that niche rather than trying to do it all. There are so many ways to make money in the web3 hustle (bot minting, rarity sniping, short/long term swing plays, getting a paid role with a project or protocol you like, deep dive analysis to find gems, trading crypto/NFTs based on technical analysis, weth offers, liquidity providing, allow list & airdrop grinding, etc.), you just have to find what works for you and work to hone that skill. Also, I did want to mention that I am currently doing b2b partnership outreaches for Aurox's new web3 wallet, so if anyone reading this has a community or audience that might be interested, feel free to reach out to me on Twitter or discord. Really appreciate you having me!
